Free Computer Class

Monthly computer classes at the Floyd County Library are taught by knowledgeable and friendly Library staff members. In addition to our core classes on Microsoft Word and Excel at the Library’s main location, we now offer selected computer classes at the Galena Digital Library. Registration is required; please visit the Customer Service Desk or call 812-949-3522 to register for any of the following free classes. Computer classes are held in the Main Library’s Gallery Room, unless otherwise noted. Please note: before taking classes marked with a (*), if you if you feel you aren’t comfortable with computers or need a refresher, we recommend taking Computer 101/Internet Basics first.

Computer/Typing 101

Monday, January 7, 10:30 AM-12:00 PM

In this class, you will learn the basics of computers. We will briefly cover the terms 'hardware' and 'software'. You will get an understanding of the different types of computers and their parts and learn how to perform essential functions. NEW for this class! We will go over the basics of typing, including where to place your fingers and what the different rows on the keyboard are called. There will be resources covered for practice, both in-class and at home.

 

Bring Your Own Device Workshop

Did you get some new technology for Christmas that you aren’t sure how to work? Our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Workshop gives patrons an opportunity to discuss, in an informal setting, any questions regarding their devices. We will have stations corresponding with the different types of technology, i.e. Apple, Android, Microsoft, where you can learn about your new device in a group setting. When signing up, please provide as much detail about your device and questions you have as possible (example, what kind of device is it, the brand, the operating system, etc.) so we know how many stations/people to expect.

 

Internet Basics/Staying Safe on the Internet

Take the first steps onto the Internet. Topics include: the difference between the Internet and the Web; searching for things; narrowing searches; and interesting places on the Internet. After learning how to navigate it, we will ensure that when you use the Web, you are practicing safe skills. Learn about some common misconceptions that are tied to the Internet as well as what you can do to protect your computer.

Our instructor will cover how to open Word, create, edit and save a document, and enter and format your text, as well as changing your margins and paragraph settings and making lists. Once you have created your document, you will learn the steps to print it out.

Build on what you learned in Beginner Word in this informative class. You will learn how to use different design templates that Word has available, how to use various formatting tools, and pick up some tips and tricks to make creating your document easier.

In this class you will learn the basics of Excel, including an overview of the beginning functions of Excel. You will learn how to open, create and save an Excel document, get a layout of the different tools, and find out the basic spreadsheet concepts and how to do some beginning data entry and formatting.

This class will build on what you learned in Beginner Excel, delving deeper into the concepts of Excel and its formatting. In addition, you will focus more on finishing your worksheet and how to utilize cell references between worksheets. Lastly, the instructor will cover conditional formatting and formulas that use cell references and basic mathematical calculations.

Word Q&A

This session presents an opportunity for you to practice with Microsoft Word as well as ask any questions you have regarding the program or anything that you learned in a previous class that you would like to further cover. There will also be an exercise for those who may not have any specific thing they want to go over but just want another opportunity to work with Word in a teaching environment.
